The foundation was created in memory of Donald Deneil Harrison. Donald was born June 23, 1975 in Wilmington, North Carolina.  At a very young age, one could see that there was something special about him from his interactions with various people and his concern for their well-being.  He was an honorable man who would almost give his right arm (because he was left handed) to help anyone who needed it.  To many who knew him, often referred to him as a kind and gentle “teddy bear”.

On  May 22, 2005 Donald’s life was suddenly, taken away from him, and from all who adored him.  A man whose life was cut short by one of the very things that helped to inspire this very cause; lack of opportunity.  We would love to think that by contributing to one life, it may help to save another.

The Reason

What is the foundation all about?

By contributing to the education of someone, then it will create an opportunity for them to fulfill dreams that they may not have normally been able to accomplish.  This is the true inspiration of our motto, “to help promote education to our future, for our future”.  “To our future, for our future”, is referring to the students that will be owning our banks, becoming Supreme Court Justices, and even becoming the President of the United States.  Now ask yourself, how can you achieve any of these things without the opportunity?

During the course of the year, we award students with scholarships and financial assistance.  We also have a number of giveaways to deserving students based on academic progress and leadership in the community.  Our main award is for graduating seniors.  If selected, a graduating senior is awarded a monetary scholarship and a laptop computer to take with them as they enter into their first year of a 4 year university.

The 2021 recipient, Michaela Dunn, will be a freshman education major attending Winston Salem State University.  For her exemplary effort in the classroom, and her community, Michaela was awarded  a  $200 monetary scholarship, and a brand new ASUS laptop.  We look forward to watching Michaela excel in the classroom and her new community!

Financial assistance is also a focus.  We work in conjunction with Greater Promise Elite Learning Center as a primary source regarding academic support for students.  One of our main goals is to provide financial assistance to students for educational needs such as, tutoring services, school supplies, and more!
